Essential Oils – Favorite Rollerball Blends

I found an interesting way to use essential oils is to buy a box of empty rollerballs and fill them with essential oils and a carrier oil.  They can be made ahead of time and used for all types of remedies.

Some of my recipes I used a pre-blended oil or synergy blend instead of individual oils (like Sleepy and Muscle Aid).  These are single bottles which contain a mixture of 3-6 different oils.  Depending on your essential oil inventory, you might find this to be more cost effective than buying multiple individual oils.  Other recipes I used the individual oils since I had them from my Simply Earth subscription box.

There are 2 different ways to get rollerballs:

  1. Purchase pre-made rollerballs:  They are already dilluted (aka safe to apply to skin), labeled and ready to go.  This was the method I used for ones that I would use rarely (like one for bug bites).  Basically it was cheaper and easier to purchase them from Simply Earth and Plant Therapy already made.  I also knew I only needed one and would not need multiple of them.  They can always be refilled later.
  2. Make your own:  A benefit is that I would be able to select the carrier oil and also could make multiple of the same type for family members and friends.  I can also easily refill them.  So this route was good for ones that I wanted more than one roller and also I would be using often (daily).  In order to find the recipes, I searched on Pinterest and also on the Simply Earth blog.  If you just search for “Sleep” or “Relax”, there are SO many versions.  If you are interested in making your own recipes, I would encourage looking at a few and figuring out which one appeals to you the most.  Also which recipe uses oils you already have in stock.

What I needed to make my own rollerballs:

  • Purchased box of 12 rollerballs (10ml size) from Simply Earth.  These can be found from many different companies.  Just make sure they are not clear glass since oils breakdown when exposed to light.
  • Selected my carrier oil from Simply Earth.  You can select any that you like.  There are multiple options like fractionated coconut (this is the type that does not turn to a solid in room temperature), sweet almond, camellia seed and jojoba oil.  I put in the recipes below which ones I used.  I mainly like fractionated coconut oil since it absorbs quickly.  Of course anything that you are allergic to needs to be avoided.  Example is for nut allergies, a person should not use the sweet almond carrier oil.
  • Bought a small funnel to help with filling the rollers.

For each recipe, I filled each rollerball with the carrier oil and then added “X” number of drops of the selected essential oil (I listed below the exact number of drops I used).  The reason the number of drops varies is based on the type of essential oil used.  Based on your age, there is a safe amount that will not cause skin irritations.    The label on the bottle will say the safe dilution percentage.  Example: Muscle Aid by Plant Therapy bottle says 3-6% dilution.  On their website is a dilution chart.  5% is the same as 15 drops added to 2 tsp (or 10ml) of a carrier oil.  Otherwise, the label will tell you the amount of drops per 1 tsp.  The Sleepy Blend from Simply Earth said 2 drops per 1 teaspoon of a carrier oil.  This was for me was easier to figure out.

Headache Helper

  • 10 drops Peppermint by Simply Earth
  • 5 drops Lavender by Simply Earth
  • 5 drops Frankincense by Simply Earth
  • Apply to temples and base of neck.  I find that this clears my nose and is effective at stopping the early stages of a sinus headache.  I also use this to get a little energy boost since the peppermint is invigorating.  Yes it does make me sneeze a couple of times, but this is really just my nose clearing up and I feel better afterwards.  You can always reduce the amount of peppermint to 5 drops and then increase the lavender or frankincense to 10 drops.  It really can be customized to what works best for you.
  • Here is a similar pre-made roll-on from Simply Earth =

Calm Me Down

  • 3 drops Sweet Orange by Plant Therapy (you can also use Wild Orange)
  • 3 drops Lavender by Simply Earth
  • 2 drops Cedarwood Atlas by Simply Earth
  • 2 drops Frankincense by Simply Earth
  • 10ml of fractionated coconut oil
  • I apply this to my wrists and behind my ears.  I liked this blend because I find that both the smell of lavender and orange makes me feel at peace.
  • This one is similar on the Simply Earth website, it uses Lime instead of Lavender =
